I recently discussed five things you must do if you’ve never been to Hawaii before. Of course, those great things are spread out across the islands, making it tough to decide where to go if you can’t afford to visit them all. Let’s narrow it down by talking about which island you should go to if you’re seeking adventure in Hawaii.
You’ll most likely be quite pleased to learn how many options are available. The truth is that if you’re an adventure-seeker, you’re going to have a great time on any island! Each one offers tons of ways to experience the wildest time of your life.
Of course, an adventure to one person is an arduous endeavor to another. Evaluate your level of outdoor skills, physical abilities and thirst for the unknown and then match it with the opportunities that are available on each island.
While most of the Hawaiian Islands offer chances to hike, bike, sail, kayak, surf or camp, you’ll want to take a good look at some of the unique things to do for adventure on each island and listen for which activity calls out to you the loudest.
You should probably keep your budget in mind, too. Look at how much money you have to spend on your Hawaiian vacation, then decide if your ideal adventure is one that can be had for cheap or for free, or if you’ll need to pay a tour company or guide to help you get out there and experience the adventure of your dreams.
Don’t forget to factor in the cost of flights, too. If you’re ready to book flights for your Hawaii getaway, fly with Hawaii Airlines to start your ideal vacation as soon as you board the plane!

Now, let’s take a look a few of the islands individually and the top ways to experience adventure on each one.
Oahu
On Oahu, you’ll be able to do all the surfing that your heart desires. In fact, you’ll find some of the most adventurous and fearless surfers in Hawaii on Oahu’s North Shore. You may find yourself picking up a board and diving right in if you’re an experienced surfer or taking a lesson if you’re new to the sport.
Oahu’s 112 miles of coastline are perfect for watersports of all kinds like boating, snorkeling, diving, whale watching and parasailing.
Feel like taking in a little adventure on land? Try mountain biking, ATV off-roading or hiking on any of Oahu’s 35 exciting trails. You can even skydive if you’re a real adrenaline junkie.
Maui
If you want action-packed adventure, wait until you see what’s in store for you on Maui. How does zip-lining over Kaanapali Beach or through a Haleakala forest sound? How about snorkeling around Molokini, swimming with dolphins between Maui and Lanai, taking a helicopter tour over the island and then parasailing?
OK, that would admittedly be a pretty full day, but you can do it all and more on Maui!
When you visit Maui, you can pretty much take part in any kind of adventure imaginable, including hiking Haleakala Crater to view the stars, trekking to the 400-foot Waimoku Falls, or driving alongside steep ravines on Kahekili Highway en route to the tiny village of Kahakuloa.
In Maui, you can do all kinds of things you wouldn’t normally do. If you want a break from reality, Maui is the right spot for you.
The Big Island
Hawaii’s Big Island is known as the Island of Adventure, and when you arrive you’ll realize why. Get ready to feel your heart beat like never before. You’ll feel the rush of your blood pumping through your body as you journey through the island’s thick, lush valleys, venture across lava-covered deserts and travel to hidden waterfalls so gorgeous and remote you’ll believe you’re on another planet.
View the steaming Kilauea Volcano or the expansive tundra of Volcanoes National Park from above in a thrilling helicopter ride. Scuba dive with manta rays off of the Kona Coast. You’ll be able to find adventure of every kind on The Big Island, including snorkeling, hiking and all types of watersports.
Kauai
From the minute you set foot on Kauai, you’ll be immersed in adventure. Spend hours riding mountain tubes in the waters of Lihue, hiking the trails in Kokee State Park, zip-lining through rainforests or kayaking down the Wailua River on your way to the Coconut Coast.
You’ll definitely want to try boating near the sea cliffs on the Napali Coast—and maybe even taking a 4×4 expedition to the South Shore. Prepare yourself for nonstop adventure on Kauai, and make sure you’ve chosen a peaceful place to sleep when you’re done.
Molokai
Molokai is filled with adventurous activities too, so you can’t go wrong by stopping here. You can kayak through the ocean, paddleboard over tranquil waters, explore the longest fringing reef in the United States, snorkel, scuba dive or even go on a whale-watching expedition. You can also hike, surf and enjoy the sun in many more ways.
Just decide if you’ll be going it alone or taking advantage of a group tour and then get started with your island adventure. There’s no time to waste on Molokai.
